Instagram product drops with a waitlist built from comments

ChattyFlow team · Updated

ChattyFlow's Drop mode silently collects everyone who comments on your Instagram teaser, then sends each of them your link at release. Meta allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment, so open the teaser no more than 7 days before launch. Drop mode works on Instagram only.

How a drop works, and Meta's 7-day limit

A drop campaign turns one Instagram post or reel into a waiting list. With Drop mode on, the automation collects everyone who comments and sends nothing: no public reply, no DM. At release, each person gets your DM and link button, plus your public reply if you wrote one.

That silence keeps you inside Meta's rules. A business may send one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment. Nothing goes out during the teaser, so that single reply is saved for launch.

ChattyFlow does not cap the release date, so the 7-day limit is yours to respect. Each person is listed once, from their first comment, and the 7 days count from that comment. Anyone whose comment is older than 7 days when their turn comes can no longer get the private reply.

  • Use a post or a reel for the teaser. Instagram Live will not work: Meta only allows private replies to Live comments during the broadcast.

Before the teaserFix the release date, prepare the page you will link to, write the DM and replies.Nothing yet.
Day 1 (release minus 6 days)Publish the teaser and create the automation on it: Drop mode on, release scheduled.Collects every comment on that post, one entry per person.
Days 2 to 6Remind followers in stories to comment on the teaser: the list lives on that post.Stays silent; the Drop tab shows the waiting count and a countdown.
Day 7, release timeNothing to press.Starts within a couple of minutes: sends each person the DM with your link, in comment order, then their public reply.
AfterwardsAnswer people who write back, within 24 hours of their reply.Back to normal: new comments on the teaser get the automation's reply and DM as usual.

Message templates you can copy

Be honest about timing: the link arrives at release, not the second someone comments.

  • Teaser caption: "[Product] drops [day] at [time]. Comment ME and we'll DM you the link when it's live."
  • Release DM: "It's live! You asked to be first, so here's your link to [product]." Button: "Shop the drop".
  • Public replies, rotated: "Sent! Check your DMs", "It's live, your link is in your inbox", "Thanks for waiting, check your messages".

Four use cases: restocks, limited editions, tickets, courses

The DM carries one link button: point it where people can buy, book or enrol.

Gulf sellers: Ramadan and Eid collections

Ramadan and Eid make natural drops: a new abaya or jalabiya line, perfume and oud sets, dates and sweets boxes, Eid gift hampers. Schedule the release for an hour when customers are awake and shopping, such as after iftar.

Eid follows the moon sighting and can move by a day. For an Eid-eve release, keep that day inside the 7 days: open the teaser 5 days before, not 7.

  • Gulf Arabic teaser: "مجموعة العيد تنزل الخميس بعد الفطور. اكتبوا «أبي» بالتعليقات ونرسل لكم الرابط لما تنزل."
  • The date picker uses your own time zone, so a boutique in Riyadh, Kuwait City or Doha types its local time.

Tunisian sellers: collections, restocks and events

For a Tunisian brand the same pattern fits a summer collection, a best-seller restock, Ramadan pastry pre-orders or concert tickets. Write the teaser in your audience's mix of French, Arabic or Tounsi: in Drop mode every comment counts, whatever the word.

  • Point the button at your product page or order form. The date picker shows your own time zone: Africa/Tunis for a seller in Tunisia.

What happens on TikTok

Drop mode is Instagram-only: the Drop switch is locked on every TikTok automation, in every country.

TikTok also limits comments: through the TikTok Business Messaging API, a comment can lead to a DM only for accounts in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. Everywhere else a TikTok comment cannot trigger a DM, so there is no commenter list to message later.

What Drop mode does for a launch

Built around Meta's rules

Nothing is sent while the teaser runs, so the one private reply Meta allows for each comment is saved for launch day.

Every comment counts

No keyword to remember: anyone who comments on the teaser joins the list once, however many times they comment.

Released on schedule, at a safe pace

Pick the date and time in your own time zone. Links go out in comment order, at a paced rate.

Set up a drop in five steps

  1. Fix the release date, then publish the teaser post or reel no more than 7 days before it. Six days leaves a margin.
  2. Create an Instagram automation on the teaser and switch on Drop mode. The keyword turns off: every comment is collected.
  3. Write the release DM with a link button (label up to 20 characters) and up to four public reply variants.
  4. Choose "At a set date & time" or "After a delay", counted from when you save, inside the 7-day window.
  5. Watch the waiting count in the Drop tab. At release time, sending starts on its own.

Drop campaign questions

How long can a drop collect comments on Instagram?

ChattyFlow does not cap the release date; Instagram does: a private reply must go out within 7 days of the comment. Open the teaser at most 7 days before release, ideally 6, because a large list takes hours to send.

What happens to people who commented more than 7 days before release?

Meta refuses the private reply, and ChattyFlow stops after a second try. A normal DM still reaches them if they messaged your account in the previous 24 hours.

Does everyone get the link at the same second?

No, on purpose. Links go out in comment order, at about 190 an hour per Instagram account, and each public reply appears only after that person's DM has gone out.

Can I run a drop on TikTok?

No. The Drop switch is locked on TikTok automations, and TikTok only lets a comment lead to a DM in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.

If someone comments several times, do they get several messages?

No. Each person is listed once, from their first comment, and gets one DM at release.

Can I change the release date once the teaser is live?

Yes, from the Drop tab. Keep the new date within 7 days of the first comments, or the earliest people on the list fall outside Meta's window.
